I Believe In Christ

A couple of months ago, my church choir director asked the choir members to look at and think about an upcoming piece of music, I Believe In Christ.  She asked us to read through it and find the part of the song that meant the most to us or reached out to us and to think about why that is.

For this assignment, I listened to the song a bunch as well as read through it a bunch (including printing it off on card stock paper and taking it on vacation with me...cuz I'm weird like that).  I read the scriptures referenced in my hymn book and pondered those as well.  This is such a very beautiful and touching song that I ended up having to go through each verse, and write my thoughts and feelings on each, before I could narrow down my favorite part.

I Believe In Christ
Bruce R. McConkie

I believe in Christ; he is my King!
With all my heart to him I'll sing
I'll raise my voice in praise and joy,
In grand amens my tongue employ.

I believe in Christ; he is God's Son.
On earth to dwell his soul did come.
He healed the sick; the dead he raised.
Good works were his; his name be praised.

I believe in Christ; oh blessed name!
As Mary's Son he came to reign
'Mid mortal men, his earthly kin,
To save them from the woes of sin.

I believe in Christ, who marked the path,
Who did gain all his Father hath,
Who said to men, "Come, follow me,
That ye, my friends, with God may be."

I believe in Christ- my Lord, my God!
My feet he plants on gospel sod.
I'll worship him with all my might;
He is the source of truth and light.

I believe in Christ; he ransoms me.
From Satan's grasp he sets me free,
And I shall live with joy and love
In his eternal courts above.

I believe in Christ; he stands supreme!
From him I'll gain my fondest dream;
And while I strive through grief and pain,
His voice is heard: "Ye shall obtain."

I believe in Christ; so come what may,
With him I'll stand in that great day
When on this earth he comes again
To rule among the sons of men.

2 Nephi 25: 23, 26, 29
Mormon 7: 5-7

It's funny because every time I go through this song, I seem to have a different favorite part.  Typing it out just now really highlighted so many wonderful parts to me.  Maybe everyone should take the time to type out the words; very meaningful.

I love the part that talks about Him planting my feet on gospel sod and Him being the source of light.  In my mind I think of a sunflower following the sun all day every day and how tall and bright and beautiful they get and the many good seeds they produce.  I would compare that to "I'll worship him with all my might" and imagine how much I can grow through doing that and also the goodness I can share by doing so. I know it is true.  I know that through following Christ, we can blossom and become so much more than we are or could become on our own.

Like I said, I could go through every part of this song and tell you why it is my favorite, but I want you to have the chance to do that for yourself.  Look at this song, listen to it, read it, ponder it, and find a part that speaks to you.  What is it about that part that means so much to you?  Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
